Stargazer Fish
Uranoscopus scaber
Stargazers (family Uranoscopidae) look like a fish designed by an ambush specialist with no interest in elegance: the eyes and the huge upward-facing mouth are both on top of a flattened head, so the animal can bury itself in sand with nothing but eyes and lips exposed and stillβ¦
Did you know?
- Some stargazer fish can actually produce electric shocks of up to 50 volts to stun their prey or deter predators.
- The stargazer's electric organs are built from the muscles that once moved its eyes, an origin unique among electric fishes. It has both venom and electricity, an unusual combination in a single animal. Buried in sand with only its eyes showing, some species dangle a worm-shaped lure from inside the lower lip. Its eyes are on top of its head because everything it eats swims above it.
