- Despite their bulk, Steller sea lions can dive to depths of over 400 meters (1,300 feet) when hunting for food.
- Steller sea lions are the largest eared seals in the world. Their vocal roars and barks can be heard from great distances, especially at crowded haul-out sites. Unlike true seals, they use their strong foreflippers to 'walk' on land.
