Stick Insect
Phasmatodea (order)
Stick insects (order Phasmatodea) are the most committed plant mimics among animals, and the mimicry extends far beyond shape. A disturbed stick insect will rock rhythmically back and forth, matching the sway of a twig in a breeze, and can hold a rigid, cataleptic pose for hoursโฆ
Did you know?
- Stick insects can remain motionless for hours or gently sway to mimic the movement of twigs in the wind, making them nearly invisible to predators.
- Stick insect eggs mimic seeds so well that ants carry them underground and store them, and the nymphs later walk out of the ant nest. Eggs can survive being eaten by a bird and hatch from the droppings, giving flightless insects a way to cross distances. Many species reproduce without males at all, and a captive female raised alone will still produce fertile daughters. The longest insect ever measured is a Chinese stick insect over 60 centimetres from foot to foot.
