- In some cultures, striped hyenas have been tamed and used as beasts of burden or to help guard livestock.
- Hyenas are more closely related to cats and mongooses than to dogs. A striped hyena's erectile mane can make it look nearly half again its real size, and it deploys it in standoffs rather than fighting. Its bite is strong enough to shear through the leg bones of a camel, and it digests bone almost completely, producing white droppings. In much of its range a substantial part of its diet is fruit, particularly melons, which also serve as a water source.
