- The striped possum is sometimes called the 'marsupial woodpecker' because it taps on wood to find hollow chambers, a rare behavior among marsupials.
- The striped possum uses its highly developed sense of smell and hearing to locate insect larvae beneath tree bark. Its fourth finger is exceptionally long and thin, allowing it to extract grubs from narrow crevices. When threatened, it emits a pungent odor as a defense mechanism.
