- These cockatoos have been observed using tools in the wild, such as leaves to help extract seeds from hard-to-reach places.
- Sydney cockatoos learned to open household wheelie bins and taught each other, and the behaviour spread suburb by suburb like a fashion. Residents responded with weights and spikes, and the birds responded to that, producing a documented innovation arms race. They can live over 70 years, so a bird can outlast several owners. Cockatoos produce a fine powder from special feathers that dusts the plumage white and is the reason people with the birds indoors complain of a permanent film on the furniture.
