Sumatran Rhinoceros
Dicerorhinus sumatrensis
The Sumatran rhino (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis) is the smallest rhinoceros, the hairiest, and the closest living relative of the extinct woolly rhino, a lineage that split from the others more than 20 million years ago. Fewer than 50 are thought to survive, in scattered fragments โฆ
Did you know?
- Sumatran rhinoceroses are the closest living relatives to the extinct woolly rhinoceros due to their hairy bodies.
- A female Sumatran rhino who goes too long without breeding can become permanently infertile, so isolation itself sterilises the population. It is the hairiest rhino and the closest living relative of the ice-age woolly rhino. It sings, producing eerie whale-like calls that may carry through dense forest where sight is useless. Malaysia's last individual died in 2019, ending the species in that country after decades of failed rescue.
