- The Sunbittern shares a close evolutionary relationship with the Kagu of New Caledonia, despite living on opposite sides of the world.
- Sunbitterns are famous for their spectacular threat display, fanning their wings to reveal eye-like patterns that deter predators. Despite their name, they are not closely related to true bitterns but form their own unique family. Sunbitterns are also known for their elaborate courtship dances, which involve synchronized wing spreading and calling.
