Sunda Pangolin
Manis javanica
The Sunda pangolin (Manis javanica) is a nocturnal, ant- and termite-eating mammal armoured in overlapping scales of keratin, the same protein as human fingernails, which can make up around 20 per cent of its body weight. It has no teeth at all. Its tongue is longer than its heaβ¦
Did you know?
- Sunda Pangolins are considered the world's most trafficked mammal due to immense demand for their scales and meat.
- A pangolin's tongue is anchored near its pelvis, not in its mouth, and is longer than the rest of the animal. Having no teeth, it swallows stones and grit and grinds ants in a spiny, muscular stomach. Its scales are made of exactly the same substance as human fingernails, which does not stop them being sold as medicine. Rolling into a ball works against leopards and defeats even a tiger, but it makes the animal trivially easy for a poacher to pick up.
