Did you know?
- Unlike most amphibians, Surinam toadlets emerge fully developed from their mother's back, skipping the free-swimming tadpole stage.
- The young develop inside pits in their mother's back and emerge as fully formed toadlets, skipping the tadpole stage entirely. The adult has no tongue and no teeth, and inhales prey by suction. Its front fingertips end in tiny star-shaped sensory organs used to find food by touch in muddy water. The male's call is made by clicking a bone in his throat, since a frog cannot inflate a vocal sac usefully underwater.
