- Unlike most amphibians, Surinam toadlets emerge fully developed from their mother's back, skipping the free-swimming tadpole stage.
- The Surinam toad has a unique mode of reproduction where eggs develop in the mother's back skin. It is almost completely aquatic, rarely leaving the water. Its body is incredibly flat, helping it blend in with the leaf litter at the bottom of rivers.
