Swordfish
Xiphias gladius
The swordfish (Xiphias gladius) carries a bill that is flattened and blade-like in cross-section, unlike the round, spear-like rostrum of a marlin, and it is not used as a lance but swung sideways through a school, slashing and stunning fish that the swordfish then turns and eatβ¦
Did you know?
- Swordfish can dive to depths over 2,100 feet (650 meters) in search of prey.
- A swordfish heats its eyes and brain with a dedicated organ built from a converted eye muscle, so it can see fast-moving prey in near-freezing deep water. Adults have neither teeth nor scales. Its sword is flat and edged, not round, and it slashes sideways rather than spearing. The famous "fastest fish" figures of 100 kilometres per hour or more have never been properly measured and are almost certainly wrong.
