- The takin's appearance is so unusual that it is thought to have inspired the legend of the 'golden fleece' in Greek mythology.
- Takins have a unique, thick oily skin that protects them from rain and fog in their mountainous habitats. Their flexible ankle joints allow them to easily traverse steep, rocky slopes. Takins can stand on their hind legs to reach high branches and leaves.
