Did you know?
- Unlike most salamanders, the Three-toed Amphiuma retains both lungs and gills as a juvenile but loses its external gills as it matures, becoming almost entirely aquatic as an adult.
- Three-toed Amphiumas can breathe air and survive in low-oxygen water by gulping air at the surface. They are capable of producing a loud squeak when threatened and can deliver a painful bite. Despite their size, their limbs are so small they are nearly functionless.
