- Tomato Frogs can inflate their bodies to appear larger and more intimidating when threatened.
- Its defensive secretion is a glue rather than a poison, swelling in a predator's mouth and gumming its jaws shut. Females are far larger and far redder than males, an unusual degree of reversed size difference among frogs. The colour brightens as the frog matures, and juveniles are drab. Most "tomato frogs" in the pet trade are actually the false tomato frog, Dyscophus guineti, because the true species is protected.
