- Unlike many other seabirds, Tufted Puffins can carry multiple fish crosswise in their bills at once, thanks to a unique hinge in their jaws.
- Tufted Puffins are expert divers, using their wings to 'fly' underwater while catching small fish. During the breeding season, adults develop dramatic golden head plumes, which are shed after the season ends. Their chicks, called pufflings, remain hidden in burrows for weeks before fledging at night to avoid predators.
