- There are estimated to be fewer than 10 vaquitas left in the wild as of 2024, making them perilously close to extinction.
- Vaquitas are the rarest marine mammals in the world and were only discovered in 1958. They use echolocation clicks to navigate and hunt in their turbid, shallow habitat. Females are slightly larger than males, which is unusual among porpoises.
