- Despite their size and ornate appearance, Victoria Crowned Pigeons can produce loud, clapping sounds with their wings when taking off to startle predators.
- It is the biggest pigeon alive, roughly the size of a turkey and about thirty times the weight of a city pigeon. Its lacy blue crown is permanently erect and cannot be folded down. Like all pigeons, both parents feed the single chick on crop milk, a secretion shed from the lining of the crop. It has almost no fear of people, walking rather than flying away, which is precisely why it has been hunted out of the accessible parts of New Guinea.
