- The vicuña is the wild ancestor of the domesticated alpaca, and both were revered and protected by the ancient Inca civilization.
- Vicuña wool is considered the finest and most expensive natural fiber in the world, with one animal producing only about 0.5 kg of wool every two to three years. Vicuñas communicate using a range of vocalizations, including alarm calls and whistles. They are remarkably efficient at extracting oxygen from thin mountain air due to their specialized blood cells.
