- Despite their eye-catching appearance, adult violet oil beetles are flightless and rely entirely on walking to move between habitats.
- Violet oil beetles cannot fly due to their reduced wing size. Their larvae hitch rides on solitary bees to reach the bees' nests, where they feed on bee eggs and pollen. The beetle's vivid color warns predators of its toxic secretions.
