- Despite being marsupials, female Virginia opossums can give birth to as many as 25 tiny young at once, but only a few survive to develop fully in the pouch.
- Virginia opossums have opposable thumbs on their hind feet, aiding in climbing. They are immune to most snake venoms, including rattlesnakes and cottonmouths. Their prehensile tails help them balance and grasp objects while navigating trees.
