- Despite their vulture-like appearance, Vulturine Guineafowl are not related to vultures at all; their bald head helps keep them cool in hot savanna climates.
- It was the first bird ever shown to have a true multilevel society, with stable groups that preferentially associate with specific other groups, a structure previously thought to require a large primate-like brain. Its neck hackles are long, pointed, blue-and-white feathers that hang like a cape. It can go without drinking, extracting enough water from its food and from dew to survive in near-desert. Researchers GPS-tagged an entire population of over 400 birds to work out its social structure, which is one of the most complete social datasets for any wild bird.
