- Despite their size and tusks, walruses mainly feed on small, soft-bodied invertebrates, especially clams and other mollusks.
- Walruses can slow their heart rate to about four beats per minute during dives to conserve oxygen, an adaptation known as bradycardia. Unlike most pinnipeds, walruses use their tusks to break breathing holes in the ice, a behavior not observed in seals. Their whiskers, or vibrissae, are highly sensitive and can detect the slightest movements of prey like clams on the ocean floor. Despite their bulk, walruses are surprisingly agile in water, capable of swimming at speeds up to 35 km/h using their powerful flippers.
