Wandering Albatross
Diomedea exulans
The wandering albatross has the largest wingspan of any living bird, reaching around three and a half metres, and it uses it to do something close to perpetual motion. Instead of flapping, it exploits the wind gradient above the waves โ climbing into faster-moving air, turning dโฆ
Did you know?
- A Wandering Albatross can travel more than 120,000 kilometers (75,000 miles) in a single year!
- Its wingspan reaches about 3.5 m, the largest of any living bird. A shoulder tendon locks its wings open, so gliding costs almost no muscular effort. It harvests energy from the wind gradient over the waves and can circle the Southern Ocean without flapping for hours. Pairs raise one chick roughly every two years and can live for decades.
