Water Buffalo
Bubalus bubalis
The domestic water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) numbers around 200 million animals and quietly underpins agriculture across Asia. It comes in two distinct types that are usually lumped together but are genetically well separated: the river buffalo of India, Pakistan and the Mediterβ¦
Did you know?
- The wild ancestor of the domestic water buffalo, the wild water buffalo (Bubalus arnee), is now classified as Endangered, with fewer than 4,000 individuals remaining in the wild.
- River and swamp buffalo have different numbers of chromosomes, 50 and 48, and their hybrids are only partly fertile, so the domestic water buffalo is arguably two species. Buffalo cannot sweat effectively and must wallow to survive hot weather; the mud also serves as insect repellent and sunblock. Its milk is nearly twice as fatty as cow's milk, which is why real mozzarella is made from it. There are around 200 million domestic water buffalo and only a few thousand wild ones left.
