- A Wels catfish can produce deep, rumbling sounds using its swim bladder to communicate or startle prey.
- Wels catfish in a French river have learned to lunge onto gravel bars to grab pigeons, then thrash back into the water, a behaviour that appeared only after the fish were introduced there. Its thousands of teeth grip rather than cut, and it kills by suction, engulfing prey whole. It is scaleless, nearly blind, and hunts entirely by taste, touch and electric sense. It is Europe's largest freshwater fish and can exceed 2 metres and 100 kilograms.
