- Despite their large size and apparent clumsiness, Western Capercaillies are capable of swift and powerful flight when threatened.
- Male Western Capercaillies can reach nearly twice the size of females, a rare trait among birds. During the breeding season, males gather at traditional 'leks' to compete for females with dramatic displays. Their name 'capercaillie' derives from the Scottish Gaelic word meaning 'horse of the woods.'
