- Despite being called 'toads,' Western Toads actually lack the typical 'toad call'—males are nearly silent during breeding.
- Western Toads can produce a toxin from their parotoid glands that irritates predators. Unlike most toads, they walk or crawl rather than hop. Their loud, high-pitched trills can be heard during the breeding season.
