Did you know?
- Unlike many birds, White Storks are mute and communicate mainly through bill-clattering rather than vocal calls.
- A stork shot in Germany in 1822 with an African spear through its neck was the first hard evidence that European birds migrate to Africa rather than hibernating in the mud. Storks cannot soar over open water, so their migration funnels through Gibraltar and the Bosphorus, where tens of thousands pass in a single day. Many Iberian storks have simply stopped migrating, having found year-round food at landfill sites. The bird has almost no voice and communicates by clattering its bill like a pair of castanets.
