- Wolf eels are known to become quite tame and even recognize individual divers who regularly visit their dens.
- It is not an eel at all but a wolffish, and it crushes sea urchins with molars in its throat. Pairs mate for life and hold the same rock den for years, taking turns to guard a ball of up to 10,000 eggs for four months. Its teeth wear out on urchin spines and shells and are constantly replaced. Juveniles are bright orange and drift in open water before settling into a crevice and turning grey.
