- Yellow-eyed Penguins are one of the world’s most ancient penguin species, with lineage dating back millions of years. Unlike many penguins, they are highly anti-social and nest out of sight from one another. Their loud, braying calls can be heard during the breeding season, earning them the Māori name 'Hoiho,' meaning 'noise shouter.'
