Did you know?
- Yellow-eyed Penguins are so rare that fewer than 2,000 breeding pairs remain in the wild, making them one of the rarest penguin species globally.
- It is the only penguin that refuses to nest within sight of another pair, so restoring its habitat means planting shrubs to give each nest a visual screen. It hunts along the seafloor rather than in open water, spending most of each dive down on the bottom. Its Maori name, hoiho, means "noise shouter", after its shrill trumpeting call.
