- Unlike most crabs, the Yeti Crab is nearly blind and relies heavily on touch and chemical cues to navigate its dark, high-pressure environment.
- Kiwa hirsuta was only discovered in 2005, making it one of the most recently known deep-sea species. Its hairy pincers are so distinctive that it was nicknamed the 'Yeti Crab' after the legendary abominable snowman. The crab farms bacteria on its bristles, which it may use as a food source.
