- Zebra danios were the first fish species to be cloned, and their transparent embryos allow scientists to observe development in real time.
- A zebrafish can regrow a fifth of its own heart without a scar, which is the main reason it sits at the centre of cardiac regeneration research. Its embryos are transparent, so the entire process of building a vertebrate can be watched under a microscope in a living animal. A strain called Casper stays see-through for life, letting researchers watch cancer cells spread inside an adult body. Contrary to the usual aquarium advice, wild zebrafish live in warm, still floodplain pools and rice paddies, not cool fast-flowing streams.
