Jumping spiders see better than nearly any other invertebrate, and the way they do it is bizarre. The two enormous forward-facing principal eyes are effectively telephoto lenses โ a long tube with a tiny, boomerang-shaped retina at the back โ which buys extraordinary acuity at tโฆ

- Despite their tiny size, Zebra Jumping Spiders can recognize and track prey with remarkable precision, rivaling much larger animals in visual acuity.
- Its main eyes work like telephoto lenses, and it scans by physically moving the retina around inside its head. Six more eyes give it near-360ยฐ motion detection to decide where to point the good ones. It jumps hydraulically, pumping fluid into its legs rather than relying on muscle. It trails a silk safety line and uses it to steer in mid-air.
