- Zebra plecos are endemic to a single stretch of the Xingu River, and their habitat is now severely threatened by the construction of hydroelectric dams.
- Zebra plecos are one of the few Loricariidae catfish species that do not eat much algae, preferring a protein-rich diet. Their distinctive striped pattern provides camouflage among the rocks of their native riverbed. They were only scientifically described in 1991, making them a relatively recent discovery.
